FORT VAN DER WIJCK THE RED WALL GOMBONG CENTRAL JAVA
This
fortress is a stronghold of the Dutch East Indies which was built
around the 19th century Located in the City Gombong, Kebumen, Central
Java, approximately 300 m from the highway Kebumen - Yogyakarta, this
castle is one of the interesting sights in South Coast Line , Van Der
Wijck name itself comes from the name of the commander at the time that
his career is quite brilliant in silencing the resistance of the people
of Aceh. At its inception, the fort was named Fort Cochius (Fort
Cochius) of the name of one of the general Dutch Frans David Cochius
(1787-1876) once assigned Bagelen (one region Kedu residency).
With
an area of 3606 m2 and 9.67 m high, which dominates the color red makes
this castle conspicuous than the old buildings around it. The fort has
16 barracks with a size of 7.5 x 11 m2. The complex of buildings around
Fort Van der Wicjk was a military barracks that was originally used to
dampen the strength of the troops of Prince Diponegoro. Because of the
greatness he is also supported by local leaders in the south of Java,
Netherlands tactics stelsel fortress which construction of the fort in a
location that already mastered. The goal is clear, to strengthen the
defenses of the enemy at the same time narrowing the space, especially
in the South Kedu residency. This fort was established on the initiative
of General Van den Bosch. In the Japanese colonial era, it became a
fortress complex PETA warrior training.
Today,
the castle complex became Cadet School and the military barracks of the
army. There is also a building which functioned as a hotel and
multi-purpose room. But not only that, the fort was also a mainstay
attractions Gombong and the surrounding area. Not Just a old fort, now
the manager also complement these attractions with a children's
playground paddle wheel swivel, swan boats, cars etc. In addition,
management also provides a mini train that transports visitors from the
main gate to the fort which is some distance. There is also a statue of a
giant dinosaur, which certainly makes children become happy and
excited. Not to forget the food stalls diverse add a lively tourist
attraction Fort Van der Wijck.
However,
the most unique fact is their mini train just above the castle. With
this train, visitors can surround the castle and enjoy the view from the
top of the castle. Perhaps this is the only one in Indonesia where
visitors can ride the top of the castle. From the top of the castle
visitors can see a soldier who was practicing in a field not far from
the fortified complex. Enough to pay the ticket Rp 5,000 per person,
visitors can ride the mini train for about 15 minutes. Although the
surrounding scenery is not spectacular, but the thrill ride the top of
the castle you can only get here.
In
addition to the train on the fort, visitors can also see the rooms
inside the castle. Those spaces formerly functioning as a military
barracks, guard posts, and offices. There is also a special room that
contains photographs of the ancient castle, before restoration, and
after restored.
There
is another unique, which is a bulletin board that reads "Before
entering the castle you should pray for a moment according to their
individual belief." Although impressed by the scare, but should indeed
be followed only. Indeed, as an old military complex that has a long
history, certainly a lot of bloodshed here, so the impression of
sinister difficult to remove. But as long as you are polite, God
willing, will not happen. You also have to remember, the castle is
located in a military complex, so do not apply arbitrarily and honor
people who live in this complex. Wait no more, if you are passing
through town Gombong, do not forget to stop at Fort Van der Wijck and
enjoy its charm.
